The Phantom Empire with Gene Autry was a science fiction thriller made like a western, not unlike Star Trek's original premise of "a cowboy film in space".
This is very reminiscent of several similar films, notably "Undersea Kingdom" with Crash Corrigan and Lon Chaney, Jr.
